Listen to YouTube with Screen Off on iPhone: Free, No Premium

The free YouTube app pauses audio when your iPhone locks because background playback is part of YouTube Premium. That does not mean every iPhone listener needs Premium. 1. Open Safari and go to youtube.com.
2. Tap the aA button in the address bar and choose Request Desktop Website.
3. Start the video from the website, not the YouTube app.
4. Lock your iPhone. If the audio pauses, wake the Lock Screen or open Control Center.
5. Press Play on the iOS media widget to resume with the screen off.

Safari is a useful workaround, but it is not a great daily listening system. It can be fiddly, autoplay is unreliable, queues are weak, and it still behaves like a video page rather than an audio library.

When YouTube Premium is the right answer

YouTube Premium is the official full solution. It unlocks background playback inside the YouTube app and also includes ad-free video, YouTube Music, and official downloads where available. If you move between watching and listening all day, or if the video matters, Premium is the least-friction option.

If you mainly want your iPhone to keep playing talk-heavy YouTube channels while the screen is off, Premium may be more than you need.
